About This Tool

NinjaFunction's GST Calculator adds GST to a price or takes it out of a price that already includes it. Pick a common rate such as 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%, or type your own, and see the base amount, the GST, the CGST and SGST split and the total. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.

🔑 How to Use

  1. Choose Add GST or Remove GST.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Pick a GST rate or type your own.
  4. Read the GST, the CGST / SGST split and the totals.

💡 Pro Tips

  • ✔ Price tag already includes GST? Use Remove GST to find the base price.
  • ✔ For IGST, use the full GST amount, not the CGST / SGST half.
  • ✔ Working out a sale price too? Use the Discount Calculator.

GST Slabs

RateExample on ₹1,000GST
5%₹1,000₹50
12%₹1,000₹120
18%₹1,000₹180
28%₹1,000₹280

Adding and Removing GST: The Formulas

TaskFormulaExample (18%)
Add GSTPrice + (Price × Rate ÷ 100)1,000 → 1,180
Remove GSTTotal ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)1,180 → 1,000
GST inside a totalTotal − Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)1,180 → 180
CGST or SGSTGST amount ÷ 2180 → 90 each

Why You Cannot Just Subtract the Percentage

If a bill of ₹1,180 includes 18% GST, subtracting 18% of 1,180 (₹212.40) gives ₹967.60, which is wrong. The 18% was added to the original price, not to the total, so you must divide by 1.18 to get back to ₹1,000. This is the most common GST mistake on invoices, and the Remove GST mode avoids it.

CGST, SGST and IGST

When a seller and a buyer are in the same state, the GST is split into two equal parts: CGST goes to the central government and SGST goes to the state. When they are in different states, the whole amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same in both cases.

Who Can Use This

  • Shop owners: check the price on a tag or invoice.
  • Freelancers: add GST to a quote.
  • Buyers: find the real price before tax.
  • Accounts staff: double-check a figure before filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add GST to a price?

GST amount = price × rate ÷ 100. Add that to the price. For ₹1,000 at 18%, GST is ₹180 and the total is ₹1,180.

How do I remove GST from a price that includes it?

Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). ₹1,180 at 18% gives ₹1,000 before GST. Do not simply subtract 18% of ₹1,180, which gives a wrong answer.

What are CGST and SGST?

For sales within one state, GST is split equally between the central government (CGST) and the state government (SGST). For sales between states, the full amount is charged as IGST.

What are the common GST rates?

The usual slabs are 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Check the current rate for your item, as rates are changed by the GST Council.

Is this tool official?

No. It does the arithmetic only. Use the rate on your invoice or the government GST portal for filing.
